You don't TRUST your team; that's the problem.
I love being in the details of the work we doOxegene Creative.
But I've learned, painfully, how that hurts the output of the team.
So I've been trying to find the balance and here's my working theory...
Do what only I can do.
There's a certain perspective I bring to projects based on my experience and ability to pull certain insights. Things that the team will miss otherwise.
Typically, these insights are most relevant at the beginning of the project because they set the tone for how the rest of the project goes.
My job is to get in when needed, make sure those things are clearly communicated, and then move out of the way!
It is ridiculous how much faster we move when I'm able to do this and then trust the team to do what they do best.
As leaders, it is easy to overestimate how much we're needed in the weeds of a project. But you'll quickly become a downfall of your team if you don't manage that temptation well.
So the conclusion; make clear decisions, communicate and get out of the way of your team.
But here's why you'll find it hard to take that advice although you know it's true.
YOU DON'T TRUST YOUR TEAM!
You think they can't do the job without you.
Maybe you're right, either way here is the best line of action in my opinion...
Step 1. Give your team all the context, info and support they need to execute a task and get out the way.
Step 2. If they aren't able to deliver, they're either not good enough or you're failing at all the things in Step 1, so repeat step 1.
Step 3. If they're still not getting the job done, maybe it'll be one of two things;
a) A skills gap; in which case you can help them train to fill that gap if you can afford to or let them go and hire more competent people.
b) A character flaw; if they're lazy and unwilling to learn or change, then it's time to let them go.
Another important thing is to make sure you're giving your team the right incentives. That's a combination of monetary compensation and projects that align with the long-term goals, interests and desires of the team amongst other things.
I work with#creatives, and giving them projects that are fun, challenging and align with their own goals produces the best results in terms of speed and quality.
Do whatever you can to help you TRUST your team more.
I'm only able to make the promises I make to the businesses we work with because I trust my team and the collaborators I work with.
And I hope you get to the point where you can build a team that you trust. It's MAGICAL
